What is a combi boiler?
A combination boiler supplies central heating and heats tap water as it is needed. In a conventional combi setup there is no separate hot-water storage cylinder. That is different from a system or regular boiler, which works with stored hot water.
Heating demand and hot-water demand are separate parts of the specification. A boiler that can meet the heating load still needs to be assessed against the water supply and the way the household uses baths, taps and showers.
One bathroom, two bathrooms: what changes?
Bathroom count gives us context, but simultaneous use is more informative. Two bathrooms used at different times create a different requirement from two showers regularly running together.
A combi may be appropriate for a home with more than one bathroom, but that is not automatic. We consider incoming flow and pressure, the appliance’s verified hot-water performance and the comfort you expect when outlets run together. Where demand is high, a cylinder-based arrangement may be worth considering.
Water supply comes before appliance choice
Dynamic water pressure and available flow need to be assessed while water is being drawn. A pressure reading alone does not establish how much hot water can be delivered at several outlets.
Selecting a larger model does not repair a restricted incoming supply. Existing showers also need checking when changing from stored hot water to a mains-fed combi arrangement. We explain any supply or compatibility limitations before making a recommendation.
Space saved, with practical limits
Removing the need for a separate cylinder can release useful storage space. That does not mean every cylinder or loft tank can simply be taken out: existing connections and the wider system must be assessed first.
A combi avoids waiting for a cylinder to recover, but hot-water delivery depends on the supply and appliance capacity at the time you draw it. Heating and hot-water controls, service access and an appropriate boiler position remain important.
Replacing a combi or changing the system
For an existing combi replacement, we check whether your household needs have changed, the condition of the heating circuit, controls, flue route and condensate disposal. Retaining the arrangement may be sensible without retaining the old specification.
For a conversion from a regular or system boiler, the assessment includes the cylinder, any tanks, hot-water pipework and showers. Space saving should be weighed against the work involved and the ability to serve your household’s demand.
Configuration and fuel are different decisions
A combi, system or heat-only label describes the arrangement. Gas, LPG and oil describe fuel choices. The available supply, appliance compatibility and the installation design must be checked separately; a listed gas model is not automatically suitable for LPG or oil.

Common questions about combi boilers
Is a combi boiler suitable for two bathrooms?
It may be, depending on simultaneous hot-water use, incoming water flow and pressure, and the selected appliance. Two bathrooms alone do not establish suitability.
Does a combi need a hot-water cylinder?
A conventional combi supplies domestic hot water on demand and normally does not need a separate storage cylinder. Unusual or specialist arrangements require their own design assessment.
Can a bigger combi fix low water flow?
A larger appliance cannot create flow that the incoming supply does not deliver. We assess the water supply before comparing combi specifications.
