Cardiff City earned a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Birmingham City, with Yousef Salech’s first-half finish settling the contest.
Birmingham arrived with three consecutive wins and three clean sheets behind them. Cardiff brought that run to an end through persistence in attack and concentration when the visitors threatened late on.
For everyone at SwiftHeat UK Group Ltd, proudly associated with Cardiff City Football Club, it was an afternoon that captured so much of what makes supporting the Bluebirds special.
Salech turns disappointment into the winning moment
Salech had scarcely expected to start. An injury to Krystian Bielik during the warm-up brought the forward into the side at short notice, setting up an eventful return to action.
His first major opportunity came from the penalty spot after a foul on Perry Ng. James Beadle made the save, leaving Cardiff searching for the breakthrough.
Salech’s response was the defining moment of his afternoon. When Ollie Tanner delivered into the box, the striker used his strength to protect the ball, turned and finished beyond Beadle.
“I've missed chances and I've missed penalties before. But that doesn't end the game.”
That attitude showed in the goal. He stayed available, trusted his ability and made the next opportunity count.
City keep pressing — and Trott protects the points
Cardiff continued to pursue a second goal after the break. Cian Ashford was denied by Beadle, while Salech sent another effort narrowly wide. The Bluebirds kept creating, but the scoreline left the outcome in the balance.
Then came the moment that mattered at the other end.
With time running out, Demarai Gray threatened an equaliser from close range. Nathan Trott reacted superbly to keep him out, preserving Cardiff’s advantage at a stage when there would have been little time to recover.
Those two contributions tell the story: Salech’s composure after disappointment and Trott’s readiness after a relatively quiet afternoon. Alongside the work of their teammates, they helped deliver another home victory and a clean sheet.
